Interview with Laurie "Loz" Ferdinands, Spectral Birth vocalist/guitarist/bassist.

Here's an interview with Laurie "Loz" Ferdinands, from cult Melbourne band Spectral Birth. Interview conducted by Stuart Maitland via e-mail.

1. Sinful dreams and The Turbulence demos were released on vinyl(333 copies) by Blackace records. Were you aware of that and have you seen them? If it was only a bootleg, are there any plans for old SB to be released officially on CD or Vinyl?

We weren't aware of the Blackace release until after it was done, but I'm cool with it. Got myself a copy at least! Yes there are current plans to release Raze on CD & LP, so fingers crossed!

2. What do you think of the current metal scene today compared to when you started? What new bands do you listen to now? What styles do you prefer to check out.. Have you also gone back to check out old bands that you overlooked back in the day that you are now only discovering?

Definitely rediscovered Rush, and a lot of the 1970s heavy rock pioneers. Lot of great stuff from back then (particularly Leafhound and Atomic Rooster and Toad). In terms of thrash/death today, I really appreciate the Technical Death Metal movement, and I'm constantly amazed at the technical brilliance of bands in that genre (eg. Obscura, Neuraxis, Necrophagist, Kronos, Soreption, etc.)

3. Any current melbourne bands that you can recommend? Do you know TAIPAN? Did you know they have reformed... have you heard their newer stuff? Spectral Birth and TAIPAN would make for a great double billing...

I'm not really aware of many Melbourne bands at the moment.

4. Can you tell me when SB played their last gig before their hiatus?

I think it was June 1993, but I'm not 100% sure.

5. Did you stop playing and writing thrash until 2010?

Yes that's correct.

6. How did the new songs from 2010 come about?

I started developing a new found appreciation for thrash again, particularly due to the recent rise and development of sound production and technique. I never stopped listening to the old stuff, but as we all know, the 1990s were pretty bad for the genre. Glad it got the jab in the arm it needed around 2000/2001.

7. Did you play all of the instruments except for Dav on drums?

Yep! Same ol' formula!

8. Do you still see the other 2 guys and have you talked about playing gigs again?

No plans to gig, but I'm still very good friends with Dejan and Danny, although we all live in different states now, so it's hard to catch up regularly.

9. If you could play with any band...who would that be?

Razor!

10. A lot of bands have recently played a classic album in its entirety... Which band/LP would you love to hear played live in full?

Holy Moses - The New Machine of Liechtenstein.

11. Other bands have also chosen to re-record earlier albums again, i.e, Exodus - Bonded by Blood for example. Is there an album that you d like to hear re-recorded with better sound/production, or do you think old albums should be left alone as it marks a special period in that bands history?

I do like the idea of re-recordings. I would probably choose Kreator's Pleasure to Kill. Great songs, but the recording back then didn't do it justice (particularly the drumming).
