Another hard episode to compile due to the many great Swedish Death Metal bands to choose from, but I mainly wanted to focus, after looking at the Swedish scene of the 1980s in last week's episode, on the period post "Left Hand Path" as this album really planted fiercely the flag of Swedish metal into the ground and inspired so many other Swedish death metal releases to come afterwards. The foundation of the Swedish death metal scene was the underground tape-trading phenomenon, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s there was no internet, mobile phones and it was virtually impossible to hear/know about extreme metal without real dedication! The fact that the Swedish death metal scene was mainly made up of young males between the ages of 14 to 18 is all the more impressive. Today, most people on this planet have heard the words "Swedish death metal" and have some idea as to it's main characteristic sounds (the Stockhlom sound having the fat buzzsaw guitar made helpful by the bossman heavy metal pedal turned to 10, deep guttural vocalz, heavy bass & thundering drums or the Gothenburg sound with slightly more melodies, screechy/throaty vocalz, and generally more cleaner production) that's quite a feat, considering the brutality of the music and the discrimination these young male Swedes would have encountered back when it all started....I finnished the show with MORBUS CHRON which features Nicke Andersson's brother, Robert, and BASTARD PRIEST with their song "power of death" which I thought was quite fitting since Swedish Death Metal is still going strong! And check out Daniel Ekeroth's great book, Swedish Death Metal.
